Kolam Pancing Sek 24, Shah Alam – 9 OCT 2014
Freshwater pond fishing in Malaysia has the largest total numbers of anglers and it has been in the angling industry for years. One of my Facebook friend Mr. Emir is the authorized re-seller for Umpan Ulong which produces more than 10 different bait flavoring that are researched and designed for pond fishing. I’ve seen them catching a lot of different stocked pond fish like Mekong Catfish, Patin, Big Head Carp @ Tongsan, and Rohu. So I decided to text him to see whether we can meet up or go fishing together. We schedule our meeting on the 9th Oct at Kolam Pancing Sek 24, Shah Alam.
Over the past 2 years, Fishyology has been focusing on the technical fishing like lure casting and jigging. Bait fishing report has been limited thus I decided to add another dimension to this blog by incorporating paid pond fishing which is Malaysia’s favorite angling preference. They should not be neglected and the way I see it they are also Anglers and no different from any other technique as we all love to do the same thing, FISHING!!
On that day, I decided not to bring my rod as I am not really prepared with all the bait and rigs. So I drove down to Shah Alam and meet Mr Emir at 12.00pm. They are organizing a small meet-up of all members of Team Anglers Pro Event (A.P.E) and it is held at Kolam Pancing Sek 24, Shah Alam. The event begins at 8am in the morning and would finish at 5pm. During the morning session, they only manage to land small patin but still no sign of Mekong Catfish.

Registration Counter, RM35 for 12 hours if I’m not mistaken

Let the game begin, bit intimidated because this guys are pretty good as this is their turf haha!
Meet up Emir and we catch up on what we have been doing over the years. Both of us are from SAAS, Kajang and I am surprised that both of us loves fishing. It was a brief introduction from both sides. I was there to monitor and learn a few tricks from TEAM A.P.E. I can consider myself noob around them haha! but the are open in sharing their views and knowledge about FW pond fishing. Although some people’s perception towards bait fishing is easy, apparently you are mistaken. It is not easy and it considers a lot of factor to ensure your bait to stand out from the rest. During that day alone they have been using a lot combination which I can’t seem to keep up haha. Its all about balancing the right scent, what sort pallet or ground bait to use, the right rig and hook and bait placing. Umpan Ulong for me has been providing some basic insights on the best combination. I’ve been using it for the past 1 year and the result was good.Although I’ve never catch anything bigger then this boys but it still prove that it works.

Finally, this looks like a good size Mekong Catfish!

As we continue on towards the end of the day, they manage to land another 3 Mekong Catfish and 2 large Catfish. Proves the versatility of the bait as we can increase our chance in catching other species. If you guys are heading to Kolam Pancing Sek 24, Shah Alam, be ready with the correct bait and rig. It can get pretty busy during weekend thus weekday is the best time to head down to try to tame the Mekong Catfish and several other exotic species. I used to fish here several years ago, back then it was different from today. Now its a sport fishing pond and applies catch and release policy.
We finish our session around 4.30pm. I learn a lot in-terms of freshwater pond fishing. Thank you to my friend Emir Kura who invited me to this fishing outing and meet up with Anglers Pro Event Team. I wish them all the best and I look forward for future collaboration by both parties. For future post, I will be sharing the rigs and bait combination thanks to Emir. Nothing much I can share about today but watch out for this section in the future. Adios!
