HISTORY OF FLAG
A flag is a piece of fabric most often rectangular or quadrilateral with a distinctive colored design that is used as a symbol, as a signaling device, or as decoration. The term flag is also used to refer to the graphic design employed by a flag, or to its depiction in another medium. The first flags were used to assist military co-ordination on battlefields, and flags have since evolved into a general tool for rudimentary signalling and identification, especially in environments where communication is similarly challenging (such as the maritime environment where semaphore is used). National flags are potent patriotic symbols with varied wide-ranging interpretations, often including strong military associations due to their original and ongoing military uses. Flags are also used in messaging, advertising, or for other decorative purposes.
Why am I writing about a flag? Well this is no ordinary flag, this is called an Anglers flag. A flag that symbolizes anglers and hopefully one day will be used by all people who shares the same passion in angling. It captures my attention as it is the first of its kind that a flag can be used as general symbol for angler. I believe each of us has a personalized logo, symbol or insignia that represent our very own set of belief or principle. I am calling for your guys to adopt this flag as a symbol of unity among anglers and we put aside our differences, perception and prejudice as it all balls back to the thing that we all have in common, We Love Fishing!
CREATION OF ANGLERS FLAG
Back in June 2011, Mr.A Sabre Harun is one of the founder of GoPancingMalaysia a leading angling forum in Malaysia envision a unity among anglers without any form of prejudice and discrimination. An avid angler himself, he has created an icon that will be used as symbol for anglers known as the Anglers Flag. Although it was only and widely used among GoPancingMalaysia forum members, now is the time to expand the usage of this symbol beyond GoPancingMalaysia and Malaysia. This symbols has been partly promote by Fishyology since March 2014. This post will be a good guide in sharing the meaning behind the Anglers Flag and who can actually use this flag.
The Anglers flag was design with two colors, white and pure blue. Pure blue resembles water which is an important element in angling or fishing. Although the true color of water is usually colorless, we always presumed that water is blue. Pure blue is a symbol of tranquility, confidence, intelligence and perseverance which an important element within an angler perspective itself.
White color stretches from the right vertices to the left vertices is a symbol of an angler. White is suitable for anglers that resembles integrity, cleanliness, external and internal strength as well as mental and physical strength. These are the element that should exist and associated with anglers should they want to become an ethical angler.
ANGLERS FLAG AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
Introduction of the Anglers Flag are being done across Malaysia and has created a lot of good review and positive perception among local anglers. Mr Aznir Malek, a well-known and experienced angler has dreamed of this symbol to be widely used among anglers across the globe. Although the acceptance level of this symbol as an Anglers Flag are challenging, proactive measures have been taken to promote this flag and to increase the awareness of its meaning. Thanks to angling members that contributed through the distribution of the flag across the country. Other form of promotion has been done through social media and other online partners such as Pancing.net and Fishyology.com. It has gone viral over the past month and now there are lots of anglers are sharing their piece of contribution for the Anglers Flag.
GoPancingMalaysia is spearheading the promotion through contributing the Anglers Flag sticker to boat charters, fishing pond and tackle shop around Malaysia. Although their sticker production and distribution are limited but it has resulted an overwhelming support from anglers alike. We are all thankful with this unprecedented support especially those who promoted and contributed through this awareness campaign. Ikanz Clothing, another well known angling shirt designers has started to incorporate the Anglers Flag into their latest fishing Jersey. Ikanz clothing lines has been a strong hit this year and actively promote their brands through social media. Their latest design the Eyes of Ikanz is now open for pre-order.

ANGLERS FLAG AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
General usage of the Anglers Flag is to indicate that a person is a fan of angling or fishing. The usage of this symbol is only limited by the angler’s imagination. A great example is to use this flag on a boat charter to indicate that the boat specialized for angling activity or to indicate that are anglers are within the area. It can also be used as a personalized sticker on tackle box, boat and even the angler’s car. Patches works well on shirts and caps. As mentioned earlier, it is limited to the angler’s imagination. As long as the usage of this flag are being put to appropriate usage.
We are calling for continues support from anglers to take part in this Anglers Flag promotion. We will soon have the same heritage of the white and red flag of scuba-divers that are widely accepted among divers since 1956!
Although this iconic symbol has yet to receive any form of recognition from statutory bodies and renowned organization. This will be the main challenge for all avid anglers and fishing enthusiast to continue to support the usage of this flag as an icon which one day will be recognize across the globe and stood against the test of time.
